The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve is an emission control device that sits after the exhaust manifold on a diesel engine and regulates the amount of spent exhaust gas that is returned back into the intake stream. Its purpose is to help the engine burn fuel more efficiently and completely by recirculating a portion of the exhaust fumes and running it through the combustion process again. This results in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel which decreases the vehicle’s noxious emissions (nitrogen oxides = NOx) by prohibiting the formation of some harmful gases. A problem results in the clogging of the return system which the valve controls as soot builds up preventing the engine from “breathing” normally.
