Description

Why do we use a wheel with a positive off set pairing it with enlargement spacers?
First of all a brief review of some characteristic parameters.

Definition of ET (off set) of the wheel: distance measured in mm between the center line of the wheel and the fixing surface on the vehicle hub.

  • When the fixing surface to the hub is moved inside, it is defined as negative ET
  • When the fixing surface to the hub is moved outward, it is defined as positive ET
  • When the fixing plane coincides with the center line of the circle, is defined ET = 0

example: ET positive

Definition of transverse ground arm: it is the distance measured in mm on the ground surface between the points of contact of the steering axis extension with the road surface and the center of support of the tire.

The steering axis can be defined as the axis passing through the center line of the mast and around which the hub-pivot hub unit and the complete wheel rotate during the vehicle’s steering phase.

  • The transverse ground arm is positive if the point of contact on the ground of the rotation axis extension falls within the axis of symmetry of the tire.
  • The transverse ground arm is negative if the point of contact on the ground of the rotation axis extension falls outside the axis of symmetry of the tire.
  •  The transverse ground arm is null when the point of contact on the ground of the rotation axis extension is on the center line of the tire

Transverse ground arm (positive or negative)

It is useful to know that the increase of the arm on the ground negatively affects the effort for steering (increases), the stability under braking and the wear of the bearings.

Expressions obtained by simply using average friction coefficients fm, the loads on the wheel Q and the arm b (see figure below) demonstrate that to decrease the resisting moment or the effort for steering it is necessary to reduce the arm b to the minimum possible. Mr = fm Q b

Herero 4×4 use the decomposable wheels that have the following characteristics: The Herero wheel (rim width 7.25″ or 8.25″ or 9.25″ and 16” rim diameter) consists of two semicircles whose available sizes are 2.5″, 4.5″, 3.5″ and a central flange unit coupled with high-strength bolts and special o-rings. The wheel can be equipped with a central beadlock that follows the tire from both the external and internal sides. (photo)
The ET values of the rims are:

  • With the external 2.5” semicircle and the internal 4.5” semicircle ET = 20.5 mm
  • With internal 2.5” semicircle and external 4.5” semicircle ET = -30.5 mm

The original Defender circle has ET +33.

We assume that changing any characteristic angle or distance of the wheels means changing the initial design of the vehicle which is the result of precise kinematics and dynamics studies.

Use of the wheel and widening flanges

That said Herero initially proposes its beadlock with ET -30.5 thanks to which it obtains the widening of the roadway with consequent greater stability in the lateral slopes and on the road but in doing few causes, like all wheels with negative ET, a significant increase in the transversal ground which therefore entails a greater effort for steering, less precise braking and an increase in stress transmitted to the steering and bearings. To avoid these problems and keep the roadway widened, Herero introduces a new use of its wheels, that is, it installs them “turned” in reverse or with the internal 4.5″ semicircle and the external 2.5″ semicircle, obtaining ET +20,5 which approaches the initial design condition (i.e. excellent) and by installing the track widening flanges upstream of the hubs (+ 50mm on each side) it restores the width of the roadway it had with the “bell” rim and with 315/75 16” fits perfectly within the profiles of the increased fenders + 5cm.
The extension kit includes, in addition to the front and rear flanges, the latter equipped with attachments for the brake calipers machined from solid, the high-strength studs, the pair of axle shafts, the coupling and steering bars of lengths suitable for the new dimensions of the axle expanded.

Conclusions

The adoption of the track widening kit coupled with the use of Herero 4×4 rims allows greater stability on the road and on side slopes, improves driving quality while maintaining precise steering and controlled reactions, comfort stability and driving pleasure. Furthermore, the choice of this system ensures greater resistance of the steering box, wheel bearings and front axle shafts.
