Sardigna Winter Tour |  December 8 – 11, 2022

Sardinia Winter Tour 2022, the tradition continues with HERERO 4X4. Like last December, the DEFENDER caravan set sail for Olbia. A way to meet up with old friends and meet new ones, discovering evocative, technical and decidedly tasty tracks for the products this land offers.

Then in the end it is always like this: as soon as you wake up lulled by the waves, off the Sardinian coast you wait for dawn, amidst the wind and the fresh morning breeze… it is inevitable. The colours light up and you can’t wait to disembark and start that journey, no matter how many times you have done it, what counts is the common spirit of spending time doing what you love, with the right people.

Day 1

After last year’s weather enveloped us in its white mantle, making everything surreal in the eyes of the participants, during the usual briefing, we are already wondering what will make us excited, what we will take home that will remain in our memories. Leaving Olbia behind, we enter the territory of Logudoro, a vast area encompassing the central-northern strip of Sardinia, which gives us a taste of the territory on fast dirt roads. Today’s goal is to reach Barbagia di Ollolai where we will switch from wide dirt tracks to more technical routes, leading us to the shepherd Ignazio, an obligatory stop to celebrate the start of the trip.

Always keeping an eye on the weather and the sky, in the hope that the bad weather forecast will not be water but lots of snow.

Day 2

Eh nothing, it’s raining! With the rain, we set off on a day of ascents and descents, penetrating the unspoilt nature of the Barbagia di Ollolai where time seems to have stood still, not very well-trodden tracks to fully experience an adventure almost as pioneers. From time to time we cross the roads we travelled last year, and during the stops we tell each other the anecdotes we experienced on those roads; at the end, every excuse is good for a taste of wine accompanied by a good board of local products.

Evening is fast approaching as we cross a portion of the Genargentu, among the clouds the sunset warms the colours making them soft on the surrounding landscape, along the road between Oliena and the sea.

Day 3

Like any self-respecting tradition, on the morning of the third day the beach stop is respected despite the fact that the view is well known, the customary photo should be taken this year without the vehicles in the foreground. With a majestic rainbow seeming to guide us, we head into the heart of the Barbagia di Belvì, this island constantly changing face, majestic red sandstone walls plummeting into a valley of green conifers, breaking the landscape in two, topped only by the blue of the sky. The day is long and demanding; up from the valley floor, surrounded by imposing walls and winding torrents, we ascend to an altitude of over 1,000 metres, in the direction of the Nuragic Complex of Ruinas, which we reach in the gusts in the late afternoon darkness.

Day 4

The last day began in the same lake that last year we found covered by a snowy expanse, but since it had rained, the landscape looked like a bar of mud, which allowed us to have fun for a good hour non-stop, to continue in the Supramonte, tackling quite a few obstacles and technical passages throughout the morning, until the final lunch at Efisio’s agriturismo, where the long-awaited barbecued suckling pig and many typical dishes awaited us. The icing on the cake: passing by the Cannonau cellars for a final wine tasting.
We have been looking forward to this trip all year and, having arrived on the last day, it seems that time has flown by. However, the bond between the various crews is closer than ever, perhaps because what makes an adventure special is not the vehicles or the weather, but the people you share it with. Unique people!!!
